Overview
The CSU Channel Islands Institutional Review Board (IRB), supported by the Research and Sponsored Programs (RSP) office, protects the rights and welfare of people who participate in research conducted under the auspices of the University.
The IRB reviews research involving human participants to help ensure that studies are ethically designed, risks are minimized, participation is voluntary, and privacy and confidentiality are appropriately protected. This includes research conducted by CSUCI faculty, staff, and students, as well as certain research conducted by external investigators involving CSUCI students, employees, facilities, or other institutional resources.
If you are planning a project that may involve human participants or identifiable private information, please review the resources on this website before beginning your project. IRB review or an IRB determination must be obtained before recruitment, data collection, or other research activities begin.
Submit a New Study
New IRB applications must be submitted through Cayuse Human Ethics.
New to Cayuse? Review the Guide to Creating a New Study and Submission in Human Ethics (PDF, 2,782 KB) before beginning your application. Additional training resources and a submission video will be posted here as they become available.
Before submitting, please review the IRB Review & Application page, complete the required training described on the Training & Compliance page, and prepare any applicable Forms and Templates to upload with your Cayuse submission.
Forms and Templates
The Forms page includes consent and assent templates, recruitment materials, release forms, and sample authorization letters that may be needed for either new or existing studies.
Existing Studies Submitted Before Cayuse
Studies originally approved through CSUCI’s previous paper-based process will continue to use the applicable legacy administrative forms for amendments, continuing review requests, and study closeout. Please submit these forms by email to irb@csuci.edu unless the IRB Office directs you otherwise.
Review Timing and Support
The IRB works to review complete submissions as efficiently as possible. Most CSUCI studies involve minimal-risk social, behavioral, or educational research and may be eligible for exempt or expedited review. Studies involving greater than minimal risk may require review by the convened IRB.
The IRB holds regular meetings during the academic year. Because committee members are generally off contract during the summer, review may be limited or delayed during that period. Please plan ahead, particularly for time-sensitive projects.
For assistance determining whether your project requires IRB review, preparing a submission, or navigating Cayuse, please contact the IRB Office.
Revised Common Rule
The Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (45 CFR 46), also known as
the Common Rule has been revised. The revised version took effect on January 21, 2019.
The Office of Human Research Protections in the Dept. of Health and Human Services
has created a series of videos and other resources to help explain some of the new
provisions and changes. The videos provide an overview of the major changes, and their
website provides a compilation of other educational resources including Q&A’s and recently
released guidance documents.
